Nearly 3,000kg banned plastic seized

Nagpur: In the biggest action against banned plastic items till date, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) seized 2,948 kilograms of plastic on Monday.
Following directives from municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B, officials took action against four establishments in Dhantoli, Gandhibagh, Satranjipura and Lakadganj zones and imposed a fine of Rs 35,000.
The action was taken by NMC nuisance detection squad (NDS) led by Virsen Tambe.
A fine of Rs5,000 each was imposed on Jai Durga Enterprises shop in Cotton Market under Dhantoli zone, Modern Textiles in Itwari under Gandhibagh zone and Ghatakhaye Agarbatti in Tandapeth under Satranjpura zone for using banned plastic bags.
The banned plastic was reportedly transported from Bhavnagar, Gujarat. Based on this information, NDS took action against a firm in small factory area, Lakadganj, and Mouranipur Transport Company imposing a fine of Rs20,000.
The civic body is also acting against other breaches of environmental laws. For instance, it imposed a fine of Rs8,000 against a resident of Dhantoli for not disposing tree waste. In another case, a fine of Rs12,000 was imposed on Dinesh sweet mart and Natranj bar and restaurant on Kharbi road for spreading garbage on road.
Shyam Opticals at Kamptee Road under Mangalwari zone was imposed a penalty of Rs5,000 for carrying out glass cutting work roadside, leading to noise and dust pollution. In Ashi Nagar zone, Bajrangbali Constructions at Vaishali Nagar was fined Rs10,000 for material scattered along the road.
