Belagavi: It has been almost a year since the elections of Belagavi City Corporation but the elected corporators are still to take oath, thanks to delay in mayoral elections.
This has given an opportunity to the opposition Congress to counter the ruling
BJP.
The Congress leaders in Belagavi claim both city MLAs Abhay Patil and Anil Benake are behind the delay.
In fact, Congress leaders have announced that if the government does not conduct the mayoral election, they would give gowns of the mayor and deputy mayor to the city BJP MLAs as they are acting as the unelected mayor and deputy mayor anyway. In fact, the party says it has readied the gowns for presentation.
Despite several memoranda from the Congress and independent corporators to the government, there has been no progress.
Amith Hiremath, Congress social media working president, told TOI: “We have asked them conduct polls for the mayoral post. Several other corporators have submitted memoranda for the same. But still the BJP has failed to do so. Hence, the KPCC working president told us to present the gowns for the MLAs. We’ve stitched them up already.”
Prakash Wali, a resident of Shivaji Nagar, said the drama has been caused by the BJP and local leaders want to enjoy mayoral power. “This has resulted in us suffering when it comes to development works in our wards,” he said.
