At least 60 Congress leaders, including former deputy chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Tara Chand, resigned from the primary membership of the party in support of Ghulam Nabi Azad. Azad is likely to float a new political party in the Union Territory early September.
The former Congress leaders said several top politicians from other parties in J&K and some leaders from the ruling BJP, have approached them expressing their willingness to join the new political platform on an individual capacity, under the leadership of Azad.
The leaders addressed a joint presser in Jammu and stated that there is a leadership crisis in the Congress party as they have failed to perform as an effective opposition. They accused the Congress high command of ignoring grassroots level workers and pandering to the coterie close to them.
“The Congress couldn’t play the role of an effective opposition. Barring two states, the Congress couldn’t form a government anywhere in the country. There is a leadership crisis. We tried to raise the issues with the high command, but to no effect. This is why we requested Ghulam Nabi Azad to lead us and this is when he resigned and we support him,” said Chand.
