KANPUR: A police outpost in-charge in Kannauj's Sadar Kotwali area was arrested and sent to jail on Monday for allegedly raping a woman complainant at his official residence. He was suspended with immediate effect by the departmental higher-ups.
According to reports, 17-year-old daughter of a rape survivor from a village under the Sadar Kotwali area had allegedly eloped with a local youth a few days ago. Subsequently, the woman lodged an FIR in this regard at the Sadar Kotwali.
The investigation of the case was assigned to in-charge of Haji Sharif police outpost Anup Kumar Maurya, who assured her of filing the final report in the matter. However, the woman on Sunday afternoon reached the Sadar Kotwali police station and created a ruckus, accusing Maurya of raping her at his official residence in the police line.
Sensing the charge to be grave, Inspector Kotwali Alok Kumar Dubey brought the matter to the knowledge of Kannauj superintendent of police Kunwar Anupam Singh. Subsequently, the SP asked Sadar circle officer Shiv Pratap Singh to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours. In the investigation, the allegations of the woman levelled against the out-post in-charge were established.
The outpost in-charge was arrested and after being booked under relevant sections of IPC, sent to jail on the orders of the SP. The woman stated in her complaint that Maurya over the pretext of submission of FR (final report) in her minor daughter's elopement case, had asked her to meet him at the police line. After the woman reached there, Maurya, who arrived there in plain clothes, asked her to sit on his bike. Later, he took her to his official residence at the police line, where he allegedly raped her.
After the medical examination, the police sent the accused to jail on Monday. "The medical examination of the woman has confirmed rape. After registering an FIR late Sunday, the outpost in-charge was arrested and sent to jail on Monday. The accused inspector has also been suspended with immediate effect," said the SP. The outpost in-charge whom the woman has accused has been recently promoted to inspector rank.
