THE SUPREME Court on Tuesday closed the contempt of court case against Advocate Prashant Bhushan and former editor of Tehelka magazine Tarun Tejpal over an interview given by the former to the magazine in 2009.
A bench presided by Justice Indira Banerjee closed the proceedings initiated for allegedly casting aspersions on the judiciary in the interview, after senior advocate Kapil Sibal informed the bench that an apology has been tendered.
Taking note, the bench also comprising Justices Surya Kant and M M Sundresh said, “In view of the apology tendered by the contemnors, we do not deem it necessary to proceed with the contempt. The contempt proceedings are dropped.”
The top court had issued notice to the two in the matter in November 2009.

Bhushan, however, explained that he had used his words only in a wide-meaning sense and regrets if it caused hurt to anyone. He said he supports the institution of the judiciary and especially the Supreme Court of which he is a part, and had no intention to lower the prestige of the judiciary in which he has complete faith.
In August 2020, the Supreme Court had found Bhushan guilty of contempt over some of his tweets and fined him a token Re 1.
