GURUGRAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday virtually laid the foundation stone of Maruti Suzuki's third plant, after Gurugram and Manesar, at Industrial Model Township (IMT) Kharkhoda in Sonipat.
In Kharkhoda, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and his deputy Dushyant Chautala attended an event held by HSIIDC and Maruti Suzuki Limited to formally kickstart the construction of the vehicle manufacturing plant of the auto giant that will have the potential to manufacture 10 lakh passenger vehicles each year, making it one of the largest passenger vehicle manufacturing facilities at a single site in the world. The first phase of the project will be set up with an investment of over Rs 11,000 crore.
Speaking on the occasion via video conferencing, Modi said that this expansion would form the basis of immense future potential for Suzuki. "The success of Maruti Suzuki is also a sign of strong India-Japan partnership. Relations between the two countries have reached new heights in the past eight years," he said.
On his part, Khattar said that Haryana continues to be the home turf of the auto giant in the country. "Over 50% of the total cars made in the country are manufactured in Haryana itself and Maruti Suzuki has played a crucial role in establishing and enhancing the state's prowess in the automobile industry. And now this project will usher in the next phase of industrial revolution in Haryana. More than 11,000 people will get employment from this plant," the CM said.
Speaking at the event, deputy CM Chautala, who also holds the industries portfolio, asserted that Haryana is the future and the establishment of Maruti's largest plant is a step in that direction.
"Over 40 years back, when Tau Devi Lal was the CM, Maruti Suzuki entered Haryana and changed the face of the state, especially Gurgaon. Then again in 2003, when OP Chautala was the chief minister, Maruti set up its second plant that led to Manesar evolving from a village to a city. Now, when Khattar ji is the CM and I too have the privilege of playing a crucial role in the process, Maruti is setting up a new plant in Kharkhoda. Like Gurgaon, Kharkhoda will become a tech-enabled modern city," he said.
Chautala said the government will spend about Rs 900 crore on infrastructure facilities for the development of IMT Kharkhoda. "The decision to construct the KMP expressway in 2003 has resulted in Kharkhoda becoming a favored destination for Maruti Suzuki. The expansion of road infrastructure in the state is encouraging industrialists to choose Haryana over Delhi. We need to take urbanisation seriously because that's the only way to improve the economy of the state."
