Mumbai News Today, Kamal R Khan’s bail plea to be heard today; Metro 3 completes first trial run Highlights, 30 August 2022: Actor Kamaal R Khan, also known as KRK, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly posting derogatory tweets in 2020 against late actors Rishi Kapoor and Irfan Khan and for comments on his YouTube channel, said the police. Khan, who was arrested at the Mumbai airport, has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days. His bail plea will be heard on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) began the trial run for Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line-3 in the Aarey Colony. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the Trial run of Metro 3 project in Mumbai.

The Bandra West Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Mumbai, which is famous for recreating prominent temples at the annual Ganesh festival, has created a 52-feet replica of Kathmandu’s famous Pashupatinath temple this year. This Ganesh mandal is also known for its use of colourful lights in various formations that draws huge crowds. Last year, the organisers had successfully created a replica of Uttarakhand’s Kedarnath temple. The year before, which was also the mandal’s silver jubilee, saw them crafting a replica of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s Wada (residence) in Ratnagiri.

Ganesh Chaturthi: Traffic curbs in Mumbai for five days, beware of old and dangerous bridges

The Mumbai Traffic police would be imposing traffic restrictions across the city on the five days when the ‘Visarjan’ (immersion) procession of Lord Ganesh idols will take place as part of the 10-day Ganesh Chathurthi festival or Ganeshotsav.

The traffic curbs from noon till 6 am will be in place on September 1 (one-and-a-half-day Ganpati idol immersion), September 4 (fifth-day immersion), September 5 (Gauri Ganpati immersion), September 6 (seventh-day immersion), and September 9 (Anant Chaturdashi). More Info.

Five of the oldest Ganesh mandals in Mumbai

The oldest Ganpati mandal in Mumbai, was established in 1893, the same year Bal Gangadhar Tilak first celebrated Ganesh Puja as a community festival in the city. Mumbai’s first Sarvajanik Ganpati, it is celebrating its 129th year this Ganesh Utsav.

Known for its traditional and eco-friendly celebrations, the Ganpati mandal is set up in the small, open space between chawl number 1 and 2 in Keshavji Naik Chawl. The idol has always been of 20-feet height and is made by Rajendra More, a fourth-generation idol maker based in Mumbai. More’s family has been making the idol for this mandal since it was established by Naharshastri Godse, a close family friend of Tilak. Its speciality is that on the day of the visarjan, volunteers working with the Tejukaya Mandal carry the 22-feet idol into the waters bearing its weight on their shoulders, without the use of trolleys, trucks or any other machinery. Pollution control board to monitor noise levels during Ganesh fest, urges mandals to adhere to SC guidelines

Officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) said Tuesday they will monitor noise levels in Pune on the five prominent days of the Ganesh festival beginning Wednesday.

“The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board will monitor 25 prominent locations in Mumbai and 18 in Pune. We will monitor noise levels on five prominent days of the festival beginning with the first day where the Ganesh idol will be installed,” Nitin Shinde, Sub Regional Officer, told The Indian Express. Elgaar Parishad case: Accused Jyoti Jagtap moves Bombay HC challenging special court bail rejection order

An accused in the Elgaar Parishad case, Jyoti Jagtap, recently approached the Bombay High Court challenging an order of the special court that refused to grant regular bail to her.

A division bench of Justice Ajay S Gadkari and Justice Milind N Jadhav Tuesday posted the plea for a hearing after two weeks.

A special NIA court in February this year had rejected the bail applications of four accused in the Elgaar Parishad case, including Jagtap. Two killed, three injured after car collided with ST bus on Maharashtra highway

Two persons were killed and three seriously injured when their car collided with a state transport bus on the Mumbai-Goa highway in Maharashtra's Raigad district on Tuesday, an official said.

The accident took place on the highway near Poladpur in Raigad district this morning, the official from the district headquarters said.

The car collided head on with a bus of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), he said. (PTI)

With one day to go for Ganesh festival, 150 of Mumbai’s 2,925 mandals yet to receive BMC approval

With one day to go for the Ganpati festival, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has still not approved 5.13 per cent (150 of 2,925) of the applications received from Ganesh mandals for erecting pandals. A total of 2,284 have received permission this year and 491 have been denied permission till now.

While 80 applications are pending approval by the traffic police, 87 are pending approval from the Mumbai police and 40 are pending with BMC at various levels. Several applications are pending approvals at two or more stages, such as the BMC and the police, or traffic and the Mumbai police, according to information from the BMC.

The Ganesh festival will be celebrated from August 31 to September 9. (Read Mire)

Mumbai Metro line-3 trial run begins

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) on Tuesday launched the trial run of the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Metro line-3 at Sariput Nagar in Aarey Colony here.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis flagged off the trial run around 11 am.

Former Maharashtra MLC Prabhakar Sant passes away

Former member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Prabhakar Sant has died due to old age related ailments, family sources said on Tuesday. He was 90.

Sant, who represented the teachers’ constituency from Konkan between 1982 and 1988, died at his home in Kalyan town of Thane district on Monday, the sources said.

During his tenure as MLC, he had set up a number of schools. He had worked for the welfare of teachers and promoted education in rural parts of the state.

Top officials told The Indian Express that talks with Maharashtra government officials, coupled with reviews by the Prime Minister’s Office, now indicate the marquee project is likely to get the “land issue” in the state “sorted out” by October-November, clearing the most significant hurdle the bullet train project has faced since inception.

In other news, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray on Monday met Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at his official residence in Malabar Hills, Mumbai. The meeting assumes significance as BJP is planning to have a covert alliance with MNS for the crucial BMC polls in Mumbai. The meeting also comes ahead of Union Minister Amit Shah’s visit to Mumbai on September 5. Officially, BJP and MNS tried to keep the meeting under wraps. But a senior official in BJP confirmed, “Fadnavis and Thackeray had a meeting.” Although what exactly transpired in the meeting is not known, BMC polls may have been on the agenda.
