BMC to take Rs 1,080cr hit by not hiking property tax

The BMC will not realise Rs 1,080 crore in revenue as property tax hike has been deferred for yet another financial year in Mumbai, reports Richa Pinto. Officials said property tax collection had already taken a hit during the two years of the pandemic. The BMC is also forgoing Rs 462 crore due to the property tax waiver for those living in homes below 500 sq ft. This concession has been implemented from January 1 onwards. A total of 16. 14 lakh residential flat owners have benefited from it. A hike in one of the civic body’s biggest sources of income is due to take place every five years. The last time property tax was hiked was in 2015. Thereafter, in 2020 and 2021, hikes were deferred owing to the pandemic. This year, it was deferred a third time last week.

Bank driver flees with Rs 17L, held in Bihar

A driver of a foreign bank, Naresh Yadav (46), has been arrested for allegedly fleeing with Rs 17 lakh, reports S Ahmed Ali. Yadav, who was on cash collection duty in south Mumbai, vanished with the car recently and has been arrested from Bihar, the police said. While Rs 10 lakh has been recovered, the driver claimed he used the rest to pay off debtors in Bihar, the police said. The car was found abandoned in south Mumbai without the cash bag, but details of where the vehicle was found were not made available by the police.

Bhendi Bazaar redevelopment gets stop-work notice

Municipal commissioner Iqbal Chahal on Saturday issued a stop-work notice for the 16. 5-acre Bhendi Bazaar cluster redevelopment project. The notice came within two days of deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announcing an indepth inquiry into the project following complaints of change in layout plans affecting road widths.
