Panaji: Tourism minister Rohan Khaunte said on Monday that tourists “are welcome to Goa but should act responsibly”.
The minister was responding to questions in the aftermath of the murder of BJP functionary Sonali Phogat, who died last week.
“Every individual who visits Goa should take responsibility for himself,” he said. “The tourism ministry is here to provide all possible avenues of enjoyment and the best infrastructure so that tourists can have good memories of their holiday in the state.”
“Tourists should do things rightly and safely,” Khaunte said, adding that the tourism sector is the backbone of Goa’s economy, and there’s no need to bring tourism into every aspect, especially when “the state has taken measures”.
Khaunte refused to comment on why so much time has been taken to transfer the case to the CBI even though BJP is in government both at the state and at the Centre. “The chief minister is the right person to comment on it,” he said. “Chief minister Pramod Sawant, as home minister, has already acted on the case.”
Phogat and her aides had parties at Curlies, Anjuna, hours before her death. Since the registration of the case as murder, four persons, including two companions of Phogat have been arrested.
Sawant had said that if needed, the investigation of the Phogat case will be handed over to the CBI.
