Around 500 police, traffic personnel deployed in Noida ahead of twin towers demolition

Around 500 police and traffic personnel besides the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) have been deployed as the area around Supertech's twin towers here was put out of bounds for civilians ahead of Sunday's planned demolition of the structures.

Road diversions were put in place early in the morning, as evacuation of all residents from the two adjoining housing societies of Emerlad Court and ATS Village in Sector 93A was completed around 8 am, police officials said.

DCP Rajesh S, who is also the police's incident commander for overseeing the evacuation exercise, said, "Around 400 civil police personnel were on demolition duty Sunday."

DCP (Traffic) Ganesh Saha said separately 150 to 200 traffic personnel were also deployed across Noida at all crucial junctions to facilitate movement of vehicles in view of restrictions and diversions on several routes.

Pulmonary tests to be done, before and after the blast, to assess impact of the dust and debris

Silvercity opens its gates to evacuated residents of Emerald Court. Utopia has also offered 50 free parking spaces to residents of Emerald Court and ATS Village. Swimming pools, overhead tanks and green areas have been covered by plastic sheets in all housing societies in Noida’s Sector 93A.

RWAs are getting pulmonary tests of residents done, before and after the blast, to assess impact of the dust and debris. Authorities have set up sprinklers, smog guns, pollution monitoring equipment and other devices at the site, but there will be no escaping the dust, say experts.

The demolition will generate nearly 80,000 tonnes of debris; a huge mushroom cloud of dust. About 25,000 tonnes of the debris will have to be scientifically disposed of in three months.

Shockwaves comparable to one-third of a typical earthquake

When the twin towers come hurtling down, an estimated 41,720 tonnes will hit the ground under the Apex tower, while Ceyane approximately weighs 18,150 tonnes.

Supertech’s twin towers, when they come cascading down in just 13 seconds from the blasts, separated by milliseconds, turn loose its foundations, will cause shockwaves comparable to one-third of a typical earthquake that measures one on the Richter scale.

The only element remaining to be connected is the final detonator — a 100m long cable that will connect the chargers in the structures to the detonator button. The flick of this switch will turn the towers into a pile of rubble in a matter of seconds, says Edifice Engineering.

The demolition will generate nearly 80,000 tonnes of debris; a huge mushroom cloud of dust. About 25,000 tonnes of the debris will have to be scientifically disposed of in three months.

New Delhi: The demolition in Noida is scheduled to take place at 2.30 pm on Sunday.

The demolition of the Apex (32 storeys) and Ceyane (29 storeys) towers would leave behind approximately 35,000 cubic metres of debris that would take at least three months to be cleared.

The go-ahead for demolishing the twin towers with explosives was given by the Supreme Court. The exercise was earlier supposed to start on 21 August but the court accepted the Noida Authority’s request and extended its date of demolition to 28 August.

The twin towers are set to be razed over grave violations of building norms. The top court had said that it was a result of “nefarious complicity” between the Noida Authority and Supertech and ordered that the company shall carry out the demolition at its own expense under the supervision of the Noida Authority and an expert body like the Central Building Research Institute.

The order had come on a batch of petitions filed by homebuyers for and against the 11 April, 2014 verdict of the Allahabad High Court which had ordered razing of the two buildings within four months and the refund of money to apartment buyers.

The Supreme Court has said that the date of demolition may be confirmed as 28 August, with a “bandwidth of seven days” between 29 August to 4 September, to take into account any marginal delay on account of technical reasons or weather conditions.
