PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: Over 1,000 residential establishments, including housing societies and bungalows, in the PCMC limits have been served notices for failing to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
More than 70 cases of dengue have been reported in the PCMC (Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation) limits since July. The civic body has intensified the surveillance across the eight zones.
According to a report by the PCMC, around 902 suspects have been identified with dengue-like symptoms so far in August. Preventing and eliminating breeding is crucial to control the disease, as control measures are severely limited once the larvae emerge as adult mosquitoes.
The report added 92 dengue cases had been reported till August 26, with a most of the cases reported in July and August. There has been no death reported so far. The civic body has fined 18 establishments Rs58,000 for failing to clear mosquito breeding spots.
Ganesh Deshpande, the health executive officer at the PCMC, told TOI, "Dengue cases have significantly increased from the month of June, and we have increased our surveillance across the civic limits."
Even though the citizens are cooperating in the surveillance drive, some of the bigger housing societies have been found to be reluctant towards it, said Deshpande.
He said that the residents of the housing societies should ensure that their premises are free of discarded containers, tyres, and plastic bottles, as these are the most common breeding sites. Aedes Aegypti prefer to breed in containers filled with clean water inside and outside homes. "One should also check the flower-pot plates, money plants and the water in the fridge drip pans regularly," he added.
