NEW DELHI: A criminal died and another was injured during a suspected gang war in south Delhi’s Devli on Friday evening.
The deceased was identified as Kapil, a history-sheeter. The initial probe suggests the shooters from a rival gang came on a scooty and fired multiple times at the targets. They suspected to have used .32 calibre pistols.
Police said Kapil, along with his three friends, were standing outside a car at Raju Park Road when two men came on a scooty and fired indiscriminately at them and fled between 7.30pm and 8pm. Residents were caught unawares and ran for cover. They claimed that nearly half a dozen rounds were fired on the busy road.
A PCR call was made and a team from the local police station rushed to the spot. Both the victims were taken to a hospital where one was declared brought dead. The injured person is in critical condition.
Senior police officers visited the spot later. Police have collected CCTV camera footage from the area and adjoining stretches to identify the killers. A forensic team also went to the spot.
“One of Kapil’s friends was able to save himself by running from there,” police said. The cops will question him regarding the shooting.
The cops suspect that the case was the result of a gang war. It is being probed whether Kapil was also attacked by a group in southeast Delhi a few days ago. An officer said raids were being conducted in south Delhi and neighbouring districts.
Residents are in shock after the assault. “It took place on a busy road, which is a matter of concern. Police should enhance the security arrangements in the area,” one of them said.
An FIR under sections of murder and attempted murder has been registered. The Crime Branch and the Special Cell are also probing the incident.
