New case filed against Suriya’s 'Jai Bhim' under Copyright Act for alleged story theft

Suriya’s critically acclaimed ‘Jai Bhim’ has now once again landed in legal trouble. According to reports, an FIR has been filed against director TJ Gnanavel on August 25 with the Chennai police.
Reportedly, the complaint was filed by one V Kilanjiyappan, the person on whom the character in the film is based. The complainant has alleged that the makers of the film have used his story but did not pay him for the royalty which they had earlier promised. The case has been filed under the Copyright Act Section 63 (a) against director TJ Gnanavel and the production house owned by Suriya which produced the film.

Reports suggest that Kilanjiyappan described the acts committed by the police against the tribal community people at the Kammapuram police station in 1993. He also claimed that a royalty of Rs 50 lakh was promised by the movie makers. In his complaint, he also added that the entire film had shown the incident only in a bad light and said that the film exploited the victims.

‘Jai Bhim’ is a film that speaks about police brutality against the marginalised community and the discrimination faced by the tribal community is focused on. The film is loosely based on the works of lawyer and justice Krishnawami Chandru.

Not long ago, all cases pending against the film were quashed by the Madras High Court. Earlier, the political party had filed a case stating that the film portrays a particular community in a bad light.
