BENGALURU: The Kalasipalya market, one of the oldest and arguably the most popular, could soon be shifted out of central Bengaluru.
The Basavaraj Bommai cabinet, on Thursday, gave approval to develop a vegetable market on 42 acres and 31 guntas of land the government has acquired at Gulimangala village, attached to Singena Agrahara fruit market near Bommasandra
Law minister JC Madhuswamy said Rs 100 crore has been sanctioned for the new market, of which Rs 48 crore will be used to acquire land, and the remaining Rs 52 crore to develop facilities at the market.
“There is a crying need to develop such markets in all four corners of Bengaluru, but this is subject to land availability,” Madhuswamy said. He said since land was acquired in Gulimangala earlier, the government decided to develop this market first. He said the cabinet also decided to construct two more vegetable markets — one at Magadi Road and another on the road to Kolar — to facilitate farmers and consumers.
Session from Sept 12The cabinet also decided to convene a 10-day session of the legislature from September 12. The monsoon session is expected to be a stormy one as the opposition Congress and JD(S) have suggested that they will put the government on the mat over its failure to provide compensation to flood victims and the civil contractors’ association’s claim of ministers demanding 40% kickback. D Kempanna, president of the association, had met Siddaramaiah, opposition leader in the assembly, on Wednesday and had asked him to raise the issue in the house.
