Distinguished Scientist Dr. Samir V Kamat has been appointed as the new chairman of India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Kamat succeeds Dr. G Satheesh Reddy who will take charge as Scientific Advisor to Raksha Mantri. Earlier, Dr. Kamat was Director General Naval Systems & Materials (NS & M) at DRDO since July 2017. Dr Kamat will hold the charge of chairman at DRDO till he attains 60 years of age or until further notice. 

In a statement on Thursday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved, the "appointment of Dr Samir V Kamat, Distinguished Scientist, and Director General, Naval Systems & Materials as Secretary, Department of Defence Research and Development Organisation from the data of his assumption of charge till he attains the age of 60 years or until further orders, whichever is earlier."

Further, the statement said, the Cabinet approved the "appointment of Dr. G Satheesh Reddy as Scientific Adviser to Raksha Mantri."

Rajnath Singh is the Raksha Mantri in India's Ministry of Defence.

He has obtained B. Tech. (Hons) in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from The Ohio State University, USA in 1988, specialising in the area of mechanical behaviour of materials.

Over the last 25 years, Dr Kamat has made significant contributions in the area of microstructure-mechanical property correlations in advanced materials such as particulate reinforced metal matrix composites, ceramic matrix composites, aluminium-lithium alloys, high strength aluminium alloys, and titanium alloys which led to their development for various defence applications. He has also been instrumental in setting up state-of-the-art experimental facilities and has expertise in the characterization of mechanical behaviour of materials in small volumes, especially for materials used in MEMS.

Meanwhile, as the top defence scientist in the country, Dr. Reddy guides the development of major programs on missiles and strategic systems, fighter aircrafts and unmanned aerial defence systems, underwater systems, radar systems, strategic materials, armaments, and futuristic technologies.

Dr Reddy has also made vital contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic. He pioneered in quickly diversifying DRDO’s talent to effectively develop required technologies in the ongoing fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. Under his guidance, nearly 50 technologies for combating COVID have been developed and about 75 products have been transferred to 100 industries. He demonstrated exemplary courage and leadership during the pandemic and his non-stop work bears testimony to his ‘never-say-die’ spirit, and effectively mirrors the outstanding humanitarian facet of a scientist.
