MLAs from the Eknath Shinde faction of
Shiv Sena and the NCP squared off at the entrance to the state assembly on Wednesday as sloganeering by both sides led to a heated exchange of words, nearly causing a scuffle between Amol Mitkari of NCP and Mahesh Shinde from Sena.
This is perhaps the first time in recent history that ruling and opposition MLAs have nearly come to blows in the legislature. NCP MLAs were carrying carrots and shouting slogans on the legislature building’s steps while members of the Shinde faction were countering them in equally loud tones. Footage from TV showed legislators mouthing expletives. Some MLAs on both sides, including Rohit Pawar (NCP) and Pratap Sarnaik (Sena), intervened to defuse thetension.
