KOLKATA: The Special PMLA judge has allowed production of Partha Chatterjee virtually after the Presidency correctional home superintendent feared for his security. Chatterjee is scheduled to appear before the judge on August 31. The judge has also allowed virtual production of Arpita Mukherjee, the co-accused in the case.
The Presidency jail superintendent had sought permission of the special CBI court judge to produce Chatterjee virtually in the next appearance. In the letter, the superintendent said that taking Chatterjee - a high-security accused person - from the correctional home to the court "may cause breach of security tremendously".
Chatterjee, who was arrested by ED on July 23, had been subject to public outrage in the past. On August 2, a woman hurled shoes at Chatterjee while he was being taken to ESI Hospital at Joka for a medical check-up. Earlier, people shouted slogans at him in Bhubaneswar. The outrage could be seen in cases of other accused like Anubrata Mandal, too, leading the state correctional home authority to rethink about the security of these "high-security accused persons".
The ED had earlier apprehended security threat for Arpita Mukherjee and sought special security arrangement for her inside the correctional home.
