CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation on Tuesday evening evicted 18 families living on pavements in Triplicane area. They were yet to be allocated houses, officials said on Wednesday.
Teynampet zonal officer S Jayachandiran said the locals were living on the pavements in Sahib Street. "The eviction process got over smoothly yesterday," he told TOI.
This area falls under the constituency of Chepauk-Triplicane MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin. The pavement dwellers, who are from a marginalized community, expressed anger over the sudden eviction without any notice.
In videos circulated in social media, one of the residents is heard saying, "If 'Kalaigner' (former CM M Karunanidhi) had been there, we would not have been evicted like this. We thought his grandson (local MLA Udhayanidhi Stalin) would do something for our development. But we have been left on the road."
