Bilkis Bano case: Women's rights group protest against release of convicts in Mumbai
Mumbai-based women's rights groups including Forum Against Oppression of Women (FAOW) staged a protest against release of 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.
On August 16, all the convicts were released after Gujarat government allowed the same under its remission policy. Many including Kapil Sibal and TMC MP Mahua Moitra have approached Supreme Court to revoke their release.
The group staged a protest at Dadar station on Tuesday. As many as 200 to 300 people undersigned an appeal prepared by the activists which demanded revoking of the release of convicts.
FIR lodged against 4, firm for providing fake documents to get COVID-19 centre contracts
The Mumbai Police registered an FIR on Wednesday against a hospital management firm and four persons for allegedly submitting fake documents to obtain contracts of COVID-19 care centres, an official said.
The FIR were registered at the Azad Maidan police station based on a complaint by former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, the official said.
The case was registered against M/s Lifeline Hospital Management Service Firm, Dr Hemant Ramsharan Gupta, Sujit Mukund Patkar, Sanjay Madanlal Shah and Raju Nandkumar Salunkhe.
Maharashtra BJP MLA Nitesh Rane demands anti-conversion law to protect Hindu women
BJP MLA Nitish Rane has demanded an anti-conversion law in Maharashtra citing alleged religious conversion of Hindu women.
The BJP MP claimed that in Ahmednagar, crimes were carried out against a woman under the guise of religious conversion. Rane asserted that such actions are taken, particularly against Hindu women, and that Hindu women who perform Nikah with Muslim men are then kidnapped and sold.
These individuals who engage in such unlawful behaviour are compensated financially. A rate card is available. Many instances of unauthorised religious conversions, according to Rane.
He also claimed that the Dy CM Devendra Fadnavis has assured him that he will introduce the anti-conversion bill in Maharashtra.

SC stops metro work in Aarey Colony until next hearing
On Wednesday, the Supreme Court ordered Mumbai Metro to postpone any work in the Aarey forest until the next hearing date, which is set for next Tuesday.
The lawsuit contesting the removal of trees from Mumbai's Aarey Colony for the metro car shed was being heard by the Supreme Court.
In its earlier statement to the Supreme Court, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) claimed that only "weeds and bushes" had been removed from the Aarey forest zone in order to make room for a metro shed.

Leopard strays into Thane house; caught after 10 hours
A leopard strayed into a house in Maharashtra's Thane district, triggering panic in the residential locality, a forest official said on Wednesday.
Forest officials managed to catch the feline after more than 10 hours on Tuesday, he said.
The leopard entered the house located at Umbarkhand village in Sahapur taluka around 4 am on Tuesday.
Residents of the village, having a population of around 250, panicked after getting to know about the carnivore venturing into the house.
Forest officials and a team from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park later reached the house. They tranquilised the leopard and took it away for release into a forest, the official said.

Mumbai saw more girl child deaths last year, reveals RTI
While the governments of the day are vigorously pushing the women empowerment schemes, an RTI reply has found that the city witnessed more female child deaths in 2021 as compared to male kids in the age group from 1-5 years.
In another worrying trend, child deaths increased last year as compared to the 2020 figure.
According to the BMC data provided to the RTI applicant Chetan Kothari, 791 kids in the said age group died in 2019. The dismal figures fell sharply by around 40 per cent to 473 in 2020 but again rose to 679 deaths the next year.
Till 2021, the female child deaths didn't surpass male ones and were less than 45 per cent of the total deaths. Of 679 fatalities last year, 345 were girl children and the rest 334 were males.

Ganpati mandal approvals soar as BMC receives 3,255 applications
The BMC has received 3,255 applications for Ganpati mandals and has issued 1,947 permissions so far. Last year, the civic body had received 2,507 applications, of which 2,048 were permitted.
A year prior, in 2020, only 1,700 mandals were allowed owing to the pandemic. With 370 applications still under process this year, the number is set to rise and almost touch the pre-pandemic (2019) figure of 3,723 applications, of which 2,489 were approved.
The 11-day Ganeshotsav will be celebrated from August 31 without restrictions for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic struck in 2020. The BMC started clearing the approvals for mandals to erect pandals from July 4 with a one-window system, with a fee of Rs 100, which was recently waived by the state government.
