CHANDIGARH: Reacting to the Congress crying foul over the arrest of former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu a day before, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday said there was no political vendetta and law was taking its course.
Replying to a question, Mann said, “In the run-up to assembly elections, we had assured people that those who looted the state exchequer will have to account for every penny. These arrests are a follow-up to that. Political people and bureaucrats were involved in the scam. The labour contractors who faced the brunt had also turned up there (in Ludhiana). There is no vendetta, had that been the case, anyone could have been booked.
We are not taking action until we have substantive evidence there was involvement of a (former) minister or orders were given by him.” Accusing the Congress of arrogance, Mann referred to instances when Ashu as minister allegedly told a DSP that he wouldn’t follow court orders and another time he had rudely shooed away a DEO. “Cabinet ministers were not gods; arrogance is not good… They (Congress leaders) came in Mohali (on Monday) and offered to get arrested. But when Ashu was arrested, they began to cry foul,” said Mann.
Asked about the allegations by Congress Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and other Congress leaders on the way Ashu was arrested, Mann quoted a couplet: “…Kabira teri jhopdi, gal katiyan ke paas, jo karenge so bharega, tu kyon bhaye udaas. (O Kabir! your hut is next to the butcher’s. Why do you worry, one reaps what one sows).
