Mysuru: A new hostel for girls to promote sports activities will come up on the premises of BR Ambedkar stadium in Chamarajanagar.
This is the first all-woman exclusive sports facility being set up in the border district to encourage women sports enthusiasts. The new hostel will come up near the Boys’ Sports Hostel which was constructed by the government seven years ago.
After the state government has approved the construction of the full-fledged sports hostel for girls at a cost of Rs 1.2 crore near the stadium, the department of empowerment of youth and sports affairs has awarded the work to Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited (KRIDL).
The hostel can accommodate 50 inmates. The department will select students from Class 5 to 10 interested in sports to train them. It will conduct annual entrance test to select the students for admissions.
The selected student must pass in the Mysuru divisional level athletics meet in Class 8 to continue their education till Class 10. Failing students in this meet will be sent out of the hostel, said the sources. Students will also be trained in volleyball, football along with athletics during their stay.
Construction of this hostel will help girls from backward districts prepare for national and international sports competitions, said Umesh, sports coach at Boys Sports Hostel of Chamarajanagar.
Speaking to TOI, Chamarajanagar assistant director of youth empowerment and sports affairs Anitha said the construction of the girls’ sports hostel, which was delayed due to the pandemic, has commenced. “The department will send the proposal to the Union government for funds under the ‘Khelo India’ programme if KRIDL needs additional funds,” she said.
