Railways faces heat over AC local trains, suspends 10 services after another commuter stir

Commuters on Wednesday staged an agitation against the Railways at Badlapur, a distant suburb of Mumbai, demanding restoration of non-air conditioned suburban trains as authorities announced suspension of 10 AC services introduced just last week from Thursday.

Introduction of AC services on the suburban section of the Central Railway (CR) has been facing resistance from a section of commuters.

A group of commuters gathered at Badlapur station in Thane district at around 10.30 am and raised slogans demanding that AC suburban trains be replaced with non-air conditioned ones.

However, there was no disruption in train services as a large number of police personnel were deployed at the spot.

In the backdrop of the agitation, which comes days after a similar protest at another station in Thane district last week, the CR announced temporary suspension of 10 recently introduced AC trains.(PTI)

Not implementing SC rules will amount to 'Sun without light', says court, discharges 2 businessmen

If this court fails to apply Supreme Court guidelines and principles, it will lead to a situation where “Sun is there, but light has gone”, observed a special PMLA judge on Wednesday while allowing the discharge pleas of two businessmen in a money laundering case in the absence of 'predicate' (scheduled) offence.

The order comes following guidelines laid down by the SC last month, specifying that a case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cannot continue if there is no scheduled offence and hence, the special court has no jurisdiction to extend judicial custody of persons arrested under the tough legislation.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) can file a complaint under the PMLA only to investigate the allegations of proceeds of crime. However, these proceeds have to be linked to a separate criminal offence (called scheduled offence) committed by the person.

The duo's discharge pleas were allowed by special PMLA court judge MG Deshpande. The judge had earlier granted interim bail to the two accused, Babulal Verma and Kamalkishor Gupta, senior executives of a real estate firm.(PTI)

Social life and life skills in focus as Mumbai colleges seek to cover lost ground after pandemic

This academic year, Mithibai College at Vile Parle in Mumbai is starting a mandatory course on life skills which will include a topic on human values and ethics. Ramnarain Ruia College in Matunga is going to teach the importance of mental and emotional health in the foundation course for first-year students. Whereas at RD National College in Bandra, a novel concept of a “student connect” initiative will be revived to ensure peer support as students are back on campus. Different city colleges have introduced novel ways to help students ease into a new normal, post pandemic.

Pandemic after-effects As colleges reopened, it was literally the first day in college for many students as for the past two years, they had had only online classes. For them, it is a huge leap from attending school before the pandemic to starting degree-college life afterwards. Their junior college years, which provide a transitional window, went in the blink of an eye as they sat in front of computer screens indoors.

However, the technology upgrades every year.”
