Berhampur: A wild booze party with friends turned into a nightmare for 45-year-old Krushna Chandra Rout, who allowed them to insert a steel glass into his rectum for fun and realised its consequences after his head cleared and the pain started. On Sunday, a team of surgeons at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Ganjam district surgically removed the steel glass from Rout’s intestine.
Sources said the incident happened 10 days back during a party in Surat where Rout works in a textile mill. He was experiencing intense stomach pain and was unable to pass stool the day after the incident. But instead of getting treated in Surat, he decided to take a train and return to his native place at Balipadar in Ganjam district’s Buguda block. Rout also did not reveal his condition to his family members due to apparent shame.
As his condition turned serious, his family members rushed him to MKCG on Friday. “He did not tell us during consultation that a steel glass (15 cm long and 8 cm wide) was in his rectum. An X-ray revealed the problem,” said Sanjit Kumar Nayak, assistant professor, surgery department.
“We formed a team of doctors to retrieve the glass on the same day as his condition was serious. Initially, the doctors tried to remove the glass through the anus. But later we decided to conduct laparotomy (surgical incision into the abdominal cavity) because there were chances of infection due to rupture in the anus. It took over two hours to remove the object on Sunday,” said Charan Panda, a professor in the surgery department.
