NOIDA/GHAZIABAD: The number of active cases in Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad is on a decline, with health officials saying that this may be an early indication of a waning outbreak.
In GB Nagar, active infections decreased to 503 on Monday, down from the 551 a day before, government data showed. The district added 54 new cases in the day, with the positivity rate at 2.1%.
Ghaziabad also saw the number of active cases come down to 300. About 39 people recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours, higher than the number of patients (31) diagnosed on Monday. The day's positivity rate was under 1% (0.9%).
Until a week before, active cases in the district had crossed the 500-mark.
Hospitalisation figures remained low in both the regions. As of Monday, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar have fewer than 14 patients admitted to hospitals in the district. The remaining were under home isolation.
In Delhi, new cases under 1k, but 7 more deaths
Since April, daily cases have been on the rise, reaching a peak of 2,726 new cases on August 11. In the past week, however, new cases have remained below 2,000. On Monday, 625 fresh Covid cases were detected from 6,744 tests at a positivity rate of 9.3%.
Omicron has shown special features not earlier seen in the Covid the virus, mainly the ability to re-infect people, said Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, co-chairman, National IMA Covid Task Force. "It not only re-infected people who had contracted Delta, but also re-infected itself. It is also now clear that vaccination gives protection against severe disease but not long-lasting protection against infection," said Jayadevan.
