KOLKATA: A 33-year-old doctor, who had been reportedly suffering from depression, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her flat at an upscale south Kolkata complex in the early hours of Sunday.
Debika Chatterjee was a divorcee and had been depressed for the last few months, her parents told the police. Cops have found a suicide note where the victim blamed none for her death.
Chatterjee lived at Flat No 14G of Tower 3 at Diamond City South Complex in Tollygunge with her parents. She had moved in the flat after her divorce, neighbours said. She was associated with a private hospital in Alipore, according to the police.
Around 2.45am on Sunday, the officers of Haridevpur police station received a call about the woman's death. They took her to Vidyasagar State General Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
Chatterjee's mother Madhabi found her room bolted from inside around 2am and when she kept calling her, she did not get any response. "She along with her husband Debasish broke open the door and found their daughter hanging from the ceiling fan. She used a bed sheet as a ligature. They opened the knot and brought her down but upon finding no pulse on her, they called the police," said DC (Behala) Saumya Ray. Cops said that in course of the enquiry no foul play could be detected. No complaint has been received regarding her death. However, cops have started an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem to ascertain the actual cause of her death. Her social media bio says the family hailed from Jamshedpur where she did her schooling before studying medicine at Burdwan Medical College. She used to specialise in obstetrics and gynaecology.
Neighbours at Diamond City South remembered her as a soft-spoken woman who mostly used to keep to herself.
