Nagpur: As the common admission process (CAP) for Std XI crawls along with vacant seats still high, educational institutes who were opposed to the process have become more vocal. Quite a few junior colleges feel that since supply of seats exceeds demand, there is no need to have CAP.
Ravindra Fadnavis, sarkaryawah of Maharashtra Rajya Shikshan Sanstha Mahamandal (MRSSM), said, “I have always wondered why so many seats are available in city colleges and it’s clear that the education department has sanctioned new sections without following guidelines.”
By guidelines, Fadnavis alleges that the physical infrastructure is not checked prior to giving sanction for increase in seats of colleges.
“The deputy director of education (DDE) has asked that sanction of new seats be put on hold till the physical inspection of colleges are done. There are colleges which have been granted over a thousand seats, but do they have that much infrastructure available,” said Fadnavis.
Fadnavis is now trying to garner support from other colleges to come forward and tackle these issues. “The older system of admission was the best. We can move with the times and make it online wherein students complete all admission formalities on the college website. But there is no logic in having CAP and multiple rounds of admission when over 30,000 seats are lying vacant,” said Fadnavis.
MRSSM has been at the forefront in the ‘fight’ against CAP for the last few years, but it seems 2022 has provided it with the best war chest till date. Even after two rounds of CAP, over 60% seats in Nagpur city’s junior colleges are vacant. Unless a miracle happens in round-3 scheduled this week, Nagpur would have had its worst ever CAP season since inception.
Fadnavis said, “Of course seats will remain vacant because students have taken admission elsewhere. CAP is mandatory only for the city, whereas colleges just outside NMC limits are allowed to deal with students directly. Aurangabad has already moved out of CAP and now it’s high time Nagpur follows suit.”
