Siddharta Shankar Nath after his arrest on Sunday
SILCHAR: Police on Sunday arrested Siddharta Shankar Nath, the principal of Cachar College, Silchar, for not following norms in conducting Assam government’s recruitment examination. It has been alleged that he also misbehaved with government officials.
Police acted in response to an FIR filed by Cachar deputy commissioner Rohan Kumar Jha against the principal on Sunday. The principal was being interrogated after he was taken to Silchar Sadar police station in the afternoon.
The Assam government is conducting by far the largest recruitment drive in the state where around 14 lakh candidates are appearing for 30,000 posts. Over 75,000 aspirants from Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi are appearing in different centers in Cachar district. According to the officials of Cachar district administration, Cachar College is the third busiest centre in Silchar after National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, and Gurucharan College. Over 1,200 aspirants appeared at Cachar College on Sunday.
“The college authorities were ignorant about the basic rules of conducting the recruitment examination which is a violation of norms,” said an official. Jha said the gates were not opened on time and when he called the principal, he asked Jha to talk to his juniors.
