Chandrapur: The Shirpur police have arrested a senior journalist from Chandrapur city for allegedly giving supari to a trio to murder his wife. The journalist has been identified as Jitendra Masharkar. Two of the alleged assailants, identified as Muhammad Raja Ansari and Sanjay Pattiwar, too have been arrested while the third one is on the run.
Masharkar’s wife Vaishali Chhallawar-Masharkar works with a ZP school at Naigaon in Wani tehsil of Yavatmal. She was attacked by unidentified persons with a sharp weapon on Thursday when she was waiting at Naigaon bus stand, which is 3-4km from Ghugus town in Chandrapur district.
One of the three assailants dealt a blow aiming at her throat, but a swift movement saved Vaishali. She sustained injury at the back of her head. The assailants then fled into the fields. Onlookers pursued them and managed to capture one of them, Muhammada Raza Ansari (20).
In the meanwhile, Vaishali was admitted to a hospital at Ghugus and discharged a day later.
During investigations, Ansari named one of his accomplices as Sanjay Pattiwar. On Friday, cops rounded up Pattiwar who reportedly told them that Vaishali’s husband Jitendra Masharkar had given them a contract to kill her.
Sources said, Masharkar and Vaishali were in a strained relationship. This is the third attempt on Vaishali’s life in the past few months, they said.
A JMFC court in Wani has sent Masharkar and Pattiwar in police custody for four days.
