SHIVAMOGGA: Md Sharif alias Asif, who allegedly forced a staff at a mall in the city to remove VD Savarkar's photo, was granted bail nearly a week after he was arrested.
The JMFC (II) court granted conditional bail to Sharif after he furnished a bond of Rs 50,000.
Sharif, who is married to a corporator, argued with a staff over Savarkar's portrait being displayed in a photo gallery of freedom fighters, on August 14 and forced the staff to remove the portrait from gallery, which later turned into a controversy.
The incident ignited a controversy over Savarkar in the city on August 15 at Ameer Ahmed Circle.
After Sharif was booked, he was handed over for judicial custody by a local court till August 21. He applied for bail on August 16, but the court asked him to submit proper documents. Finally, he was given bail late on Saturday. Soon after his release, Sharif visited a dargha and offered prayers.
Speaking to the media later, Sharif said Shivamogga will remain a peaceful place, and thanked all his friends from different faiths for extending support.
