The mid-day meal scheme of the central government was designed to improve the nutritional status of school children nationwide
AGRA: A day after TOI reported that no mid-day meal was served to the students of a primary school at Nagla Bani village under Aliganj sub-division of UP's Etah district for the past two months, government officials swung into action and paid a visit to the school on Saturday. Soon, arrangements were made and a hot mid-day meal was served to the children.
Subsequently, basic shiksha adhikari (BSA) Sanjay Singh ordered the suspension of two senior teachers posted at the school for alleged negligence of duty after the district magistrate (DM) Ankit Kumar Agarwal sought clarification over the violation of government orders.
Earlier, on Friday, the block education officer had claimed that the students were not being served mid-day meals following a dispute over appointment of a principal at the school. "The officials have been directed to regularly monitor schools. The interest of the students should not be compromised in any case," DM Kumar said.
"Following preliminary investigation, two teachers posted at the primary school have been suspended with immediate effect for violating official orders and negligence of duty. From now onwards, the students will be served a mid-day meal as per the set menu. All the block education officers have been directed to ensure that this is not repeated," said Singh. The officials of the basic education department also called the parents of the students who remained absent from school after the mid-day meal was stopped.
A class five student said, "We have now been told that the mid-day meal will be served in school and no one has to bring lunch or go home before school closes. Today after a long time, we got to eat Tehri (rice cooked with vegetables and pulses)."
The mid-day meal scheme of the central government was designed to improve the nutritional status of school children nationwide. By 2002, the scheme was implemented in all the states under the orders of the Supreme Court of India. The scheme gets legal backing from the National Food Security Act, 2013.
