Berhampur: Several villages in 10 panchayats of Kandhamal district on Saturday continued to be cut-off due to damage to culverts and landslides after the downpour. The villages are in four panchayats of Raikia and Daringbadi blocks, one each in Tumudibandh and Phringia blocks.
Sources said a culvert at Pidamaha in Tumudibandha block’s Sirala panchayat was damaged in the rains, while communication was disrupted following damage to road built under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana at Karakupa in the same block.
The culverts in Lengumaha and Simanbadi in Daringibadi block and Pajimaha in Phiringia block have also been damaged.
Several thatched houses have reportedly collapsed following heavy rains in the district. Around 50 people of Nuasahi in Phulbani have shifted to a government building as the area was waterlogged. Similarly, over 40 people have been shifted to the safer places in Phiringia block.
The district received 135 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours ending at 8 am on Saturday. The highest rainfall was recorded 211 mm in Phiringia block during the period followed by Tikabali (196 mm), Chakapada (190 mm), Phulbani (168.2 mm), Baliguda (144 mm), Kotgarh (136 mm), Khajuripada (125 mm), Tumudibandh (124.2 mm), R.Udayagiri (84 mm), Raikia (68.4 mm) and Daringibadi (53 mm), sources said.
