The pond has been undergoing renovation for the past year and a half
GURUGRAM: A 15-year-old boy who had jumped into a pond to rescue a friend drowned on Friday afternoon. Till late in the evening, police were searching for the other teen.
The boy who drowned was identified as Sonu, a resident of Samaspur village in Sector 50. Police said Sonu was passing the area when he saw the other boy struggling to stay afloat in the pond that was filled to the brim with rainwater. Being a good swimmer, Sonu jumped into the water to save him, but drowned. The incident happened around 12.30pm.
A police team soon rushed to the village with a few divers and started a rescue operation. Along with the divers, the cops too jumped into the water, led by Rajesh Kumar, the SHO of Sector 50 police station.
Around 4pm, the team of rescuers managed to fish out Sonu from the water.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival.
"We managed to trace one of the boys, but he could not be saved. The search for the other boy is still on," Kumar said.
Villagers said children regularly came to the pond to take bath. The pond has been undergoing renovation for the past year and a half. A ghat is being constructed and other beautification work like laying pathways is also being done.
"The renovation work is going on at a very slow pace. It has been more than a year and the work is still not over. The pond is filled mainly with rainwater and water overflowing from tanks," said Pramod Yadav, a villager and local BJP worker.
This is the second such incident this month. Two weeks ago, a seven-year-old boy slipped into Badshapur drain in Gadoli Khurd and is feared drowned. Even after two weeks, the police are yet to trace the child. Villagers had earlier blocked the main road, accusing the authorities of negligence.
