BENGALURU: Now, your face can be your boarding pass at Kempegowda International Airport when flying AirAsia and Vistara airlines. Contactless and seamless verification is available through the DigiYatra app, the project for single-token face biometrics for passenger verification hosted by the ministry of civil aviation. The app is now available only on Android.
The beta version of DigiYatra was unveiled at KIA on Independence Day and passengers using the two domestic airlines used the facility.
As part of the first phase, DigiYatra has been rolled out in two airports - Bengaluru and Delhi.
KIA had tested the facial recognition option in January 2017 by using it for domestic travel at one of its gates.
From Monday (August 15), the DigiYatra biometrics boarding system was operational at select e-gates of KIA. Vistara and AirAsia are the two airlines currently integrated, and the facility will be rolled out for all domestic airlines in a phased manner. Passengers used the seamless check-in, passed through security, and boarded their flights using their single-token face biometric for validating identity and boarding pass, KIA sources said.
The app's iOS version is expected in a month. Passengers can download it, register themselves using their mobile phone number and Aadhaar details, and upload their photograph into the system by clicking a selfie. When entering Bengaluru airport's e-gate, passengers can scan the boarding pass and show their face to the facial recognition camera, which will validate from the contents of the app and clear them. However, passengers must follow regular procedures for security clearance and boarding.
The DigiYatra Central Ecosystem is built on a secure platform ensuring privacy. Passenger data will be deleted 24 hours after the scheduled travel time, sources said.
