Mysuru: District in-charge minister S T Somashekar on Saturday said his government will shortly install the statue of former chief minister D Devaraj Urs in front of the newly constructed deputy commissioner’s office complex on T Narasipura Road.
He was speaking after inaugurating the 107th birth anniversary celebrations of former chief minister D Devaraj Urs organised jointly by district administration, ZP, and department of other backward classes.
The former chief minister, who was at the helm for more than eight years, brought revolutionary land reforms providing ownership rights to lakhs of tenants tilling the land. Over 22 lakh hectares of land were distributed to tenants and landless people during his period.
People still remember him for his works on the empowerment of backward classes by providing reservations to underprivileged classes after constituting LG Havanur Commission. The former chief minister established thousands of hostels for SC/STs, other backward classes o promote education, he said.
Senior leader KN Lingappa, MLAs L Nagendra, GT Devegowda, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLC CN Manjegowda, mayor Sunanda Palanethra, Safaikarmachari Commission chief M Shivanna, Mysore Paints and Varnishes Limited chairman Raghu, deputy commissioner Dr Bagadi Gautham and others were present.
