Punjab: Man kills 7-year-old nephew by pushing him into canal

LUDHIANA: Calling him a servant of his mother and frequent taunting her led to the murder of 7-years old Sehajpreet Singh of Laal Quarters of Basti Abdullapur.
Sehajpreet was missing for the past three days and on Sunday his dead body was found from Sidhwan Canal, in Sahnewal area. The police lodged a murder case against his uncle (Father's elder brother) and arrested him.
The accused has been identified as Swarn Singh, 55. The accused pushed the boy into the canal and escaped.
Sehajpreet Singh on Thursday evening had gone cycling in the area however he did not return home. They kept on searching for home however to no avail, thereafter a complaint was lodged with the Model Town Police.
Assistant Commissioner of Police- Civil Lines, Harish Behal said that on August 19, the police lodged an FIR at Model Town police station against unidentified persons under Section 346 (wrongful confinement in secret) of IPC.
When Sehajpreet did not return home, the family had called Swaran Singh to know if Sehajpreet was with him. However Swaran Singh stated that he had gone to Golden Temple, Amritsar and the boy was not with him.
"However when the police scanned the CCTV, it was found that Sehajpreet parked his cycle outside a Gurdwara near Jagraon police station and sat on the bike of Swaran Singh. When questioned, Swarn Singh started making excuses. He claimed that he was taking the boy to Amritsar to pay their obeisance however when they stopped near Jalandhar Bypass to buy fruits, Sehajpreet went missing.
Due to Swaran’s statements, he became our prime suspect” added ACP Behal.
In the further probe, the police found another CCTV in which Swran was captured taking Sehajpreet to Gurudwara Katana Sahib from Jalandhar Bypass area. From there, he took the boy to Gurudwara Sahib in Ajnod where they stayed on Thursday night. On Friday morning, Swarn Singh was captured alone while returning home in the CCTVs. When police questioned the accused, the accused said that Sehajpreet fell into the canal accidently. However later on confessed his crime that he gave him a push into the canal to kill him.
Further Sub inspector Balwinder Singh, SHO Model Town police station stated, “according to Swaran Singh he used to take care of his elderly mother as he was attached to her, however Sehjapreet’s mother used to taunt him and call him a servant of his mother. Sehjapreet’s mother is also the sister of Swarn’s wife. He was hurt by her taunting and wanted to teach them a lesson.”
