Synopsis

While it makes some serious mistakes, House of the Dragon may be able to revive Game of Thrones franchise that seemed poised to burn out.

Agencies
The prequel based on Game of Thrones (GoT) resuscitates the Targaryens and their savage pets and is set centuries before the original takes place.

The new series "House of the Dragon" is a vast improvement over the original. Since the announced the final season, big streaming platforms have scrambled to replace HBO's megahit. In recent seasons, the piece has spent far too long breathing in the hype, reeling up the deoxygenated shell of its former self.

Game of Thrones has created this entire content ecosystem to feed the mouth of an ever-expanding eyeball economy. But much of the reason this ecosystem thrived had to do with the inexperience of the showrunners. Today's TV form has changed dramatically due to this. Rather than being content with summaries, each show is followed by explainers, fan theories, and little details we might have missed.

Game of Thrones studio tour takes fans to Westeros

House of the Dragon is a competitor to the OG show, managing season turn of tables and well-rounded episodes with a well-worked introduction, body, and conclusion.

It helps that the showrunners have more experience and confidence this time around. Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are an excellent combination this time.

The series premiere cleverly features nearly ten characters minus the dragons. Even more impressive, in the six episodes released for review. The prequel keeps all the characters clear, maintains their relationships with each other, and manages a complex plot with an easy-to-understand palace conspiracy drama.

It is condensed in the looming succession crisis. It's no small feat considering the Targaryen family tree is an interbreeding loop of complicated and very similar names which are easy to be confused with one or another.

Another big mistake House of the Dragon makes trying to recreate the shock value of the original. The traumatic moments of Game of Thrones, especially the first season, worked because they flipped fantasy audience expectations. "House of the Dragon" attempts to inflict terror in its first installment with moments of terrifying violence without altering the fantasy trope at its head.
