PUNE: Chetan Dhebe, a criminal on police records, and his nine accomplices were arrested on Friday night for opening fire at Shubham Jayraj More (23) and assaulting him with a sharp weapon over an old rivalry around 6.30pm at Hingne, off Sinhagad Road, during Dahi Handi celebrations.
Assistant commissioner of police Sunil Pawar, senior inspector Shailesh Shankhe and inspector Pramod Waghmare rushed to the spot, scanned the area and arrested Dhebe, of Hingne, and his accomplices. The police team also detained four minor boys in the case.
Pawar told TOI, "Dhebe and his accomplices fired two rounds of bullets. No one was injured. We have found two empty cartridges on the spot. We are still searching for the firearm used in the crime and the sharp weapon".
The injured More lodged a complaint with the police later in the night. The Sinhagad Road police registered a case of attempt to murder, rioting, assault, causing grievous hurt and others.
"In 2020, More's friends and Dhebe had fought over some issue. The incident of Friday was its fallout," Pawar said.
According to the police, Dhebe and his accomplices reached the Dahi Handi celebrations spot on different motorcycles. They started dancing to the tunes of different songs. More and his friends were also dancing at the spot.
