JAIPUR: The Raisar police station in Jaipur (Rural) arrested seven persons, including two women, after a 32-year-old female
teacher succumbed to burn injuries in SMS Hospital on Wednesday.
Additional SP, Dharmendra Yadav said that police have arrested Babu Lal, Rajendra, Ram Karan, Prahald, Sunil, Sarswati Devi and Sulchana Devi for driving the victim, Anita Devi to take the extreme step.
Anita's family had alleged that the accused had poured fuel on her before setting her on fire at a marketplace on August 10. They cited a dispute over a loan as the cause of the crime. She died at SMS Hospital on Wednesday.
According to Yadav, the investigation revealed that Anita died of self-immolation. "We had spoken to a lot of witnesses in the case. Their statements corroborate that no one set her on fire, but she had self-immolated herself," he said.
"The accused are booked under Section 306 (Abetment of suicide) of the IPC," Yadav added.
Police said that they had gone to the house where Anit's family claimed to have taken refuge to save herself from suspects trying to attack her. "We went to that particular house and there was a woman who said that she was doing dishes when Anita came in. She also did not see anyone setting Anita on fire," Yadav said.
Yadav said that the market where the incident took place is not an isolated one. It is usually brimming with people and no one saw her being attacked.
"Our investigation indicates that she died of self-immolation. We had also examined videos of the incident and did not see anyone attacking her," he said.
Police, however, said that at the centre of this case was a row over money. Anita had given a loan of Rs 2 lakh to the accused, a relative of her, and he did not return it.
