Local accommodation (AL) in the Douro is increasing and backing the expansion of the tourism proposition in Portugal. There are now 714 units, with a total of 3,349 beds, said the Porto and North Tourism Board.
This summer, hotel units in the Douro are hoping to witness 100% occupancy, surpassing even the pre-pandemic levels. The development of the tourism sector is contributing to the broadening of the tourism offer, which isbranded by a huge range ofprogressively qualified local hotel units that are balancing the traditional hotels and farms in the region, opinedLuís Pedro Martins,the president of the Porto and North Tourism Board (TPNP).
Luís Pedro Martins said that the growth in tourist demand in the Douro, categorized by consumers with diverseenthusiasms and buying power, is one of the chiefdynamic forces behind the development of the local accommodation sector in the region.
He said that in this way, AL undertakes a principal role in the economic retrieval of territories, supporting remodeling offamous houses and remnants, and turning them into places of tourist attractions.
Luís Pedro Martins said that especially in low density areas, as is the case of the Douro, this development can back the economic vitality of several local agents that is local producers, handicraft shops,restaurants and commerce, along with generating new jobs.
As per statistics from Turismo de Portugal, Luís Pedro Martins said that the possession rate in hotels, tourist villages and tourist flats in the Douro between January and June was 45.6 percent.
