JAMMU: A jailed Pakistani Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist was fatally shot on Wednesday when he tried to flee after snatching the rifle of a policeman from a spot near the international border (IB) where he was taken to in connection with recovery of drone-dropped weapons.
Jammu zone ADGP Mukesh Singh said a policeman was also injured in the incident and was hospitalised. The slain terrorist, Mohammad Ali Hussain alias Qasim/Jehangir, a resident of Pakistan, was lodged at the Kot Bhalwal jail.
“His name had surfaced during investigation of a case pertaining to drone-dropping and subsequent recoveries of arms and ammunition, after which he was taken to identify spots where the consignments were dropped,” the ADGP said. Hussain had come under police scanner after another accused revealed that he had been instrumental in drone dropping of weapons and that he was the main operative of LeT and Al-Badr terror groups.
“In order to recover weapons, a police team along with a magistrate went to different spots. Though no recovery was made at the first place, at Toph village near the IB in Phallian area, a packet of arms, ammunition and explosives was recovered,” Singh said.
Senior police officers claimed that when the packet was being opened, Hussain attacked one of the police personnel and snatched his service rifle. “He fired at the police party and tried to flee from the spot. Policemen fired in retaliation and the accused got injured and was shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu along with the injured police official,” the AGDP said, adding that the terrorist later succumbed to his wounds. He said that the packet was being scrutinised with the help of bomb disposal squad.
