JAMSHEDPUR: Armed robbers posing as CBI sleuths barged into the Bank of India (BoI)'s Ulidih branch in Mango in broad daylight and fled after looting cash and gold ornaments worth lakhs of rupees on Thursday. The incident occurred around 10.30 am, officials at the bank told the police.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the gang entered the bank and asked the bank officials and customers present there to hand over their mobile phones, as a CBI raid is under way.
After collecting the mobile phones, they walked to the bank's vault in the backroom, looted the cash and ornaments, stashed the stuff in the bag and fled. While fleeing, they pulled down the shutter from outside, dumped the mobile phones at the entry point and fired in the open.
The police reached the bank after receiving the distress call from the officials. Footage gleaned from CCTV cameras suggested that the robbers fled on motorbike.
The police has not confirmed the firing, but said the robbers were four to six in number. "Preliminary probe suggests that nearly Rs 30 lakh stolen," SSP Prabhat Kumar said.
As the bike-borne robbers were seen fleeing towards Paridih-Chandil road in the CCTV cameras, the police have increased frisking at all check points on that route.
