Jaipur: Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said the entire nation is hurt by the death of nine-year-old Dalit boy Indra Kumar Meghwal in Jalore and that financial assistance to his family is being given by both the state government and the Congress party.
In a series of tweets from Ahmedabad, where he is on a tour to hold meetings of Congress, Gehlot said the accused schoolteacher was arrested immediately and that the matter has been taken up under the Case Officer Scheme to ensure a fast-track trial. He also said that even the local BJP MLA was not convinced about the caste angle of the incident.
“The entire nation is hurt by the death of a nine-year-old innocent child in Jalore. I met MLA Shri Jignesh Mevani in Ahmedabad and discussed the incident. All communities are with the bereaved family in this grief. The accused was arrested immediately after the incident,” tweeted Gehlot.
The CM said in another tweet, “A sum of compensation under the SC-ST Act and financial assistance from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund were given. Besides, on the instructions of AICC, a financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh is being given to the victim’s family by the State Congress Committee.”
“Any precedent of a job being given to a family member in such cases is also being examined, he added. This matter has been taken up under the Case Officer Scheme so that a fast-track trial can be conducted,” the CM said in another tweet.
Indra Meghwal died after allegedly being beaten up by a teacher for allegedly touching a pot of drinking water at Saraswati Vidya Mandir at Surana in Jalore on July 20. The accused teacher, Chail Singh, has been arrested.
