Maharashtra recorded 2,246 new coronavirus infections and six fatalities today of which Mumbai accounted for 1,201 fresh infections. City has 5,712 active cases.

Meanwhile, a suspicious boat with three AK series assault rifles and some small arms was found near Harihareshwar Beach. A police investigation is underway.  According to police, the 16 feet yacht with four occupants was rescued on June 26 from the Gulf of Oman.   The officer said they have spoken to the master of the yacht. “One security agency from Dubai has also called us to confirm that the same series of arms from their register is missing. These arms may have been used for protection of the crew.” coast guard commander General Paramesh Sivamani said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed the State Assembly that the vessel owner is an Australian woman whose husband was its captain. He ruled out the terror angle and said the boat was drifted to the coast.

Five roads in Dadar to be shut tomorrow for Dahi Handi celebrations

The Mumbai Traffic Police issued an order Thursday stating that five roads in the Dadar area of central Mumbai shall be shut for vehicular movement for ‘Dahi Handi’ programmes, which are associated with Janmashtami celebrations, on Friday. The vehicular movement shall be shut on five roads in Dadar from 7 am till 11 pm.

Ranade Road shall be closed for vehicular traffic from Paneri junction to Dadar (west) railway station; De Silva Road shall be closed from Visava hotel to Dadar (west) railway station; M C Jawale Road shall be closed from Kabutra Khana to Dadar (west) railway station; new Prabhadevi road shall be closed from Dhanmil naka and Rajabhau Desai road will be closed from Prabhadevi Naka to Appasaheb Marathe road. Maharashtra decalres Dahi Handi a sport

Maharashtra CM Eknath Sinde announced Dahi Handi a new sport. The state government will organise a pro-Govinda competition from next year where prizes will be given to winners. Maharashtra CM also announced that Govindas will be eligible for 5% sports quota in government jobs.

Country's first electric double-decker air-conditioned bus unveiled

The country's first electric double-decker air-conditioned bus was unveiled in Mumbai on Thursday. These buses will replace the existing double-decker fleet of the BEST (Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport) undertaking.

The electric double-decker AC bus EiV22 is powered by a 231 kWh capacity battery pack with dual gun charging system, which allows the bus to have a range up to 250 kms for intra-city transport, according to the company.

Uproar in Maha Assembly after Health Minister Tanaji Sawant fails to reply to questions

Maharashtra's newly appointed Health Minister Tanaji Sawant failed to reply to questions raised in the Maharashtra Assembly over issues like elephantiasis and illegal abortions, which led to an uproar in the House.

The House proceedings during the Question Hour were disrupted after Sawant failed to give satisfactory answers.

More than 1,500 people killed in accidents on Mumbai-Goa highway in 10 years: Maha minister

More than 1,500 people lost their lives in road accidents on Mumbai-Goa highway between 2012 and 2022, Maharashtra Public Works Department Minister Ravindra Chavan said in the state Assembly.

Chavan gave a written reply during a discussion through a calling attention notice by Shiv Sena MLA Sunil Prabhu. "From 2012 to 2022, a total of 6,692 accidents took place on the Mumbai-Goa highway and 1,512 people lost their lives," the minister said.

"The state government is trying to complete the construction of the highway by December 2023,” he added.

The lane widening work of the highway has been going on since many years. (PTI)

Dahi Handi celebrations turn into political show of strength as BJP eyes Sena strongholds

The BJP will organise 370 Dahi Handi programmes across Mumbai Friday, in an apparent show of strength ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

On the other hand, the Shiv Sena is gearing up to organise the Nishta Dahi Handi, at the junction of Shiv Sena Bhavan near Shivaji Park.

NIA to court: Salim Fruit was completing task left by Parkar

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) claimed before a special court on Wednesday that Salim Qureshi alias Salim Fruit was “completing the task” left behind by Haseena Parkar, the sister of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim.
Parkar had passed away in 2014.

However, Qureshi’s lawyer said that the allegation was against his client’s personal character and that he had nothing to do with Parkar. Read more

Mumbai gets 86% of average rain month before season ends

With over a month for the monsoon season to end, the city has already clocked 86 per cent of the seasonal average rainfall. The seasonal rain (from June 1 to September 30) recorded till Wednesday was 2012.1 mm.

1,800 Covid cases in state, 3-fold rise in city in a Mumbai

A day after recording 332 Covid-19 cases, Mumbai’s daily caseload surged to 975 on Wednesday, a nearly three-fold spike in 24 hours. However, civic officials advised people not to worry and follow Covid-appropriate behavior.

The state, meanwhile, registered 1,800 Covid-19 cases and six deaths on Wednesday. As of August 17, there are 11,370 active cases in Maharashtra of which 5,194 are from Mumbai. Read more

Daily passenger count on Mumbai AC train services crosses one lakh mark for the first time

The number of passengers travelling by air-conditioned (AC) local trains on the suburban Western line in Mumbai crossed the one lakh mark for the first time on August 16, said officials of the Western Railway Thursday.

According to officials, as many as 1,06,000 passengers used the AC trains on Tuesday on the 48 services that are operated on the Western line. Read more

Maharashtra records huge jump in new coronavirus cases at 1,800

Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 1,800 fresh coronavirus cases, more than half of them from Mumbai and a steep jump from 836 a day ago, while six more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said.

With these fresh additions, the overall COVID-19 tally rose to 80,76,165, while the death toll increased to 1,48,180, said the department in a bulletin.

On Tuesday, the state had recorded 836 cases and two fatalities linked to respiratory illness. (PTI)

Mumbai: Man who used app for ‘women seeking men’ kidnapped by extortionists

Three men have been arrested in Mumbai for allegedly kidnapping a man whose number they got through a dating app and trying to extort Rs 5 lakh from him after offering him the job of a male escort, the Oshiwara police said Wednesday.

The main accused in the case is a dancer who is said to have participated in a popular dance show.

According to police, the 24-year-old complainant, who has an imitation jewellery business, gave his details on a dating app for “women seeking men”. The accused called him up on August 9 saying a woman was willing to pay Rs 20,000 for a male escort and that he would get half of the amount if he accepted the offer. Read more

Fadnavis appointed Leader of House in Maharashtra Legislative Council

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been appointed the Leader of the House in the state Legislative Council, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Wednesday.

Shinde made the announcement as he introduced newly-inducted members of his Cabinet to the Upper House on the first day of the monsoon session of the state legislature.

Later, Fadnavis, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, introduced the newly-elected members of the Legislative Council.

Fadnavis is a member of the Legislative Assembly from Nagpur.

Usually, the Chief Minister is the Leader of the House in the Assembly, while the deputy CM holds the equivalent post in the Council. (PTI)

Citizens collectively sing national anthem as per state govt's appeal

Citizens of Maharashtra responded to the state government's appeal by collectively singing the national anthem in public and private institutions across the state on Wednesday.

The exercise was conducted as a part of 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' (75 years of Independence).

The state government had appealed to the people to sing the national anthem between 11 am and 11.01 am on Wednesday. As per the government's order, participation in it was mandatory for all state government departments, universities and colleges, while citizens were also expected to take part in the singing.

Accordingly, the national anthem was collectively sung in schools, colleges, government and private offices, factories and other establishments at 11 am. It was also sung in the state legislature complex at the start of the monsoon session. (PTI)

From inclusion of tainted ministers in the state Cabinet, ‘hooliganism’ from ruling party MLAs, putting a stay on the Maha Vikas Aghadi government’s schemes and lack of relief aid to farmers affected by floods, the opposition parties in Maharashtra on Tuesday raised several issues and said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should control their MLAs from disrupting law and order in the state.

Meanwhile, a day after two senior citizens died as the first floor roof of Mulund’s Moti Chhaya building collapsed, the BMC on Wednesday issued a notice for its demolition as well as that of the neighbouring building. Demolition notices were issued as both the buildings are unauthorised and do not have requisite permissions from the civic body.

In other news, based on the idea of making grandpals by nurturing fulfilling friendships between young graduates and senior citizens – through a fellowship aimed at providing meaningful companionship to senior citizens who live alone – the Goodfellows start-up was launched in Mumbai on Monday by Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons.
