PUNE: A police constable driving to his workplace at the Shirgaon chowkey was abused and beaten up by three pedestrians for asking them to walk carefully after two of them suddenly came in front of his car, forcing him to apply the brakes.
The incident occurred near Parandwadi bridge, across the Pune-Mumbai expressway, on Sunday evening. The bridge connects Parandwadi village with Somatane.
Sub-inspector Santosh Yede of the Shirgaon police chowkey told TOI that on Sunday evening constable Yogesh Nagargoje was on his way to work. "Two men suddenly came in front of his car near the bridge. Nagargoje suddenly had to apply the brakes to avoid a dash. When he told the duo that they should be careful while walking, one of them abused him," Yede said.
The officer said Nagargoje told them that he was a police constable and showed them his identity card. "He again told them to be careful while walking on the road. Following this, the duo and their accomplice again abused Nagargoje and started assaulting him. They told him to immediately leave the spot. Nagargoje then contacted the police chowkey for help. We immediately sent a team of our personnel to the spot and took the three men into custody," Yede said.
One of the assailants was from Dehu Road and two were from Pimpri. "They do not have any criminal record," Yede said.
They were been arrested under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
"The trio were produced before a court, which sent them to police remand till August 17," Yede said.
The city police had registered 62 cases and arrested 166 people on the charge of attacking police personnel in 2020-21. Last month, additional commissioner of police (crime) Ramnath Pokale had said attacks on policemen were on the rise in 2021 because the men in uniform had strictly enforced the Covid-19 guidelines to contain the spread of the virus and for enforcing traffic rules.
