PIMPRI CHINCHWAD: IAS officer Shekhar Singh will take charge as the new commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on Wednesday.
Singh replaced Odisha cadre IAS officer Rajesh Patil, who has been transferred as the managing director of the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). An order regarding the same was issued by additional chief secretary Nitin Gadre on Tuesday.
Shekhar Singh, who served as Satara district collector from March 2020 till July 2022 and was transferred in July, told TOI, "I will assume the charge most likely on Wednesday. Pimpri Chinchwad is among the fastest-growing cities in the country. It is going to be great exposure for me and I feel my background in structural engineering and other things can help me to perform well."
Singh is an alumnus of IIT Guwahati and a postgraduate in structural engineering from the University of California (Berkeley, the US). He cleared the Union Public Service Commission in 2011.
Patil was appointed the PCMC commissioner in February 2021. During his tenure of almost 18 months, Patil focussed on cleanliness initiatives and stressed on 100 percent waste segregation. Under his tenure, the PCMC's focus was to top the Swachh Bharat campaign. He also made it a priority to provide employment to transgenders and improve digital medium in governance by offering an online assessment of new properties, among others. Patil could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts.
