Assam to withdraw 1 lakh pending minor offence cases: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: The Assam government has decided to move various courts for withdrawal of at least one lakh pending "minor offence cases," like those related to social media posts, to reduce the burden on the judiciary and help it focus on heinous crimes such as rape and murder.
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing the people on the occasion of Independence Day here on Monday, said, "Standing under the national flag, I announce that we will formally seek withdrawal of minor offence cases registered till midnight of August 14, 2022 like the ones linked to some posts on Facebook or Twitter, which would be about one lakh and pending in courts. We have decided this so that that after reduction of this burden, courts can focus on heinous crimes like rape and murder."
According to National Judicial Data Grid, there are over four lakh pending cases in the state of which over three lakh are criminal cases and rest civil cases.
Sarma also announced that to inspire people and make them aware of the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The government has decided to send 1,000 youths to visit the Cellular Jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands this year as part of an educational tour. "Our freedom heroes made huge sacrifices to bring back the glory of this great nation and free its citizens. We shall forever remain indebted to them," he tweeted.
