VARANASI: A group of IIT(BHU) students landed in trouble by dancing to the tunes of Bollywood and Bhojpuri item songs after the national flag was hoisted on August 15 on the varsity campus on Monday.
The video of the dances went viral on social media after which IIT(BHU) director Prof PK Jain asked the dean of students-led student disciplinary and punishment committee of the institute to probe the matter.
The viral videos showed a large number of students, crowded in front of the tricolour, dancing on hot numbers like 'Jab Jab na maney Tinku Jiya..' and 'Jab Lagawelu tu lipstic..' on the IIT(BHU) Gymkhana ground. After going through the video, National Students Union of India's BHU unit chief Rana Rohit made a written complaint to the director IIT(BHU), demanding action against the students involved in what he termed as a disrespect to the national flag and freedom fighters.
In-charge registrar of IIT(BHU) Rajesh Srivastava said that the matter came to knowledge after the institute authorities went through these videos. "The incident took place after the institute officials and academicians had left the ground following hoisting of the national flag," he said.
Taking a serious note of the incident, a probe has been ordered by the director, he said, adding that the course of action would be decided after the submission of the probe report.
