Jaipur: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to the Rajasthan government seeking a status report on the death of a Dalit student in Jalore due to beating by a private schoolteacher for allegedly drinking water from a pot.
The commission sent a fact-finding team headed by its member Subhash Parthi on Tuesday. Taking cognisance of the incident, Vijay Sampla, chairman of the NCSC said, “Nothing can be a more disgusting act than this. The murder of the child by the school operator is heart-rending. Suo Motu cognisance has been taken (by the commission) and issued notice to the state government seeking full details of the incident.” He later tweeted, “Considering it as the rarest of rare offence, the hon’ble member of the @NCSC_GoI Subhash Ramnath Pardhi ji has been appointed to visit the spot. We will investigate this case with full seriousness. Strict action will be taken against the guilty.”
Sources said that the Commission team is in contact with the local administration of Jalore and the state government officials on the incident. “They have collected all the information related to the incident and expressed shock that the incident happened in July was kept under the wraps tell the boy succumbed to the injuries,” said the source.
The commission office is likely to summon the state officials to understand the overall situation of caste-based incidents in schools in the state. “The commission team will soon submit the report to the chairman of the SC Commission. The report will likely have the timeline of incidents and suggestions for the state government so that such incidents should not be repeated,” said the source.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has also urged the state government to take strict action against the accused teacher and take steps to ensure such cases are not repeated.
NCPCR had already issued notice to the state government on August 14. An official said that NCPCR will monitor the case and will submit a detailed report.
