BENGALURU: Namma Metro's daily ridership crossed a record 8-lakh mark on Monday, the highest ever since it commenced operations in 2011.
BMRCL records show ridership on August 15 was 8.2 lakh including Purple Line (2.5 lakh), Green Line (4.02 lakh) and Majestic interchange (1.6 lakh). Monday's daily revenue was around Rs 1.47 crore
The spike in ridership mainly on the Green Line (Nagasandra-Silk Institute) was due to the Congress rally at National College Grounds in Basavanagudi as well as Lalbagh flower show. Congress purchased around 1 lakh Metro passes for the rally.
According to BMRCL records, its previous highest ridership was over 6 lakh on October 25, 2019. Namma Metro now has a 56km network (Purple Line 25.6km) and Green Line (30km) compared to 42km before Covid-19. Post Covid, June 4 (Saturday) recorded the highest ridership with 5.07 lakh since services resumed on September 7, 2020 after a pandemic-induced break.
Currently, Namma Metro is operational between 5am and 11pm, Monday to Saturday. On Sundays, trains are available only from 7am to 11pm.
A report on ridership was prepared by the standing committee on the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA) and recently tabled in the Parliament.
