At least 138 cases of swine flu, 412 of malaria and 73 of dengue were reported in Mumbai in the last 15 days, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. According to the civic authorities, the new cases were detected between August 1 and 14. The number of infections has spiked this month compared to July, when the city had reported 105 cases of swine flu, 61 of dengue and 563 malaria cases, the official said. Incessant rains lashed Nashik city and parts of the district in Maharashtra, raising the water levels in dams and reservoirs in the region on Tuesday, an official said. Several areas of Nashik city such as Ravivar Karanja, Panchavati, Satpur, Cidco, Ambad, Nashik Road, Deolali Camp, Bhagur received showers throughout the day.Rains also lashed Trimbakeshwar, Niphad, Chandwad, Sinnar, Malegaon, Pimpalgaon and Dindori in the district, he said.

Maharashtra logs 836 new coronavirus cases, 2 deaths; active tally at 11,758

Maharashtra on Tuesday recorded 836 fresh coronavirus cases, down by 353 from a day ago, while two more patients succumbed to the infection in the state, the health department said. With these additions, the state's overall coronavirus tally rose to 80,74,365, while the death toll increased to 1,48,174, said the department in a bulletin.

Man found dead in Mithi river in Mumbai

The decomposed body of a man was fished out from Mithi river in Dharavi area here on Tuesday, police said. A passerby spotted the body of a man in his 50s in the river in the afternoon and alerted the police, an official from Dharavi police station said. The body was fished out and sent to Sion Hospital for post-mortem, he said, adding that there were no injury marks on the body.

Heavy rain in Mumbai; MeT dept predicts occasional intense showers in next 24 hours

Mumbai witnessed heavy showers on Tuesday as the rain intensity increased in the city after a gap of a few days. There was no report so far of any major water-logging in low-lying areas. Trains and bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) were running normally, civic officials said. Early in the morning, there was either no rain or light showers in most parts of the city.The heavy downpour started around 10 am, they said.

Heterologous Covid-19 vaccine now in, but choice of booster on individuals

The country’s first heterologous Covid vaccine, Corbevax, is now available at all public vaccination centres. Heterologous is when a booster dose is different from the first two doses. While the availability of the first mixand-match booster has expanded options, it has also caused a dilemma in many — should they switch vaccines for the third shot or stick to their primary vaccine? Vaccination centres will offer both heterologous and homologous choices, leaving it to individuals to decide what they want. After the Centre recently allowed mixing and matching by enabling the use of Corbevax as a heterologous booster, it was made available at all public centres from August 12. A centre head called for clarity on what should be offered to individuals when they walk into a vaccination centre. He said there had been no instructions from the Centre or state.

Monsoon month left, already city’s got 83% of season’s rain

The Santacruz observatory of IMD has recorded 83% of the season’s average rainfall with another month still to go of the monsoon season.Till 8. 30am on August 15, the total rainfall recorded at Santacruz was 1,947mm, 234mm above normal. The total rainfall required for the season that extends from June to September is 2,319mm (see box). The total rainfall recorded so far by IMD’s Colaba observatory is 1,523mm. The weather bureau has indicated that the wet spell is expected to continue in the city for the next few days. The 75th Independence Day celebrations in the city saw rain coupled with gusty winds playing spoilsport at intervals.
